Botswana has no proven oil and gas reserves. All petroleum products are imported in their refined form from neighboring South Africa. Oil-derived products supply 57% of Botswana's commercial energy needs with coal and electricity supplying 28.5% and 15% respectively. The country has no known hydrocarbon reserves and no upstream oil industry, although it does have considerable coal mining operations.

Several companies are prospecting for oil, but none had been discovered as of 1999. Petrocanada has an exploratory well in the western Kalahari. Amoco has studied the possibility of extracting methane from coal beds.
